Gary Locke recently made the first official visit to Xinjiang by a US ambassador in more than 20 years, and with a trade delegation focusing on energy, clean energy, efficiency in energy, and rail transportation. "We're here because we want Xinjiang to fully realize its great potential in terms of its mineral resources," Locke told students at Xinjiang University, "but we also want to focus on the human resources, the people of Xinjiang as well, and that's why we're here at this university.
"For centuries Xinjiang has served as a commercial and cultural center since the Silk Road of ancient times, a vibrant link between the East and West," he said, "and this region presents boundless opportunities for further cooperation and engagement between the United States and China."
Chinese Ambassador to the US Cui Tiankai traveled to Boston where he visited Zhou Danling, the Chinese student injured in the recent Boston Marathon bombing, and her family. He also met the family of Lu Lingzi, who lost her life in the incident, at Boston's Logan airport.
At the Boston Medical Center, Cui conveyed to Zhou and her family good wishes from President Xi Jinping, the Chinese government, the Chinese embassy and the Chinese consulate-general in New York. He discussed the ongoing efforts made by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs as well as relevant US authorities in searching for, rescuing and assisting Chinese nationals killed or wounded during the bombing.
During a recent visit to the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Consul-General for Houston Xu Erwen met with Governor Alejandro Garca Padilla at the governor's mansion.
US Ambassador to China Gary Locke expressed his condolences to the family and friends of Bishop Aloysius Jin Luxian, the Shanghai Diocese, and the people of China on the bishop's recent death. "Bishop Jin was deeply dedicated to his congregation and tirelessly led the Shanghai Diocese for almost 30 years, until the age of 96," he said. "During his years of service, he worked diligently to promote understanding between Chinese Catholics of all persuasions."
