China's new ambassador to the US, Cui Tiankai, attended the opening session of the 22nd Annual Conference of the Committee of 100 late last month and spoke on China-US relations. Chairman of the Committee of 100 Dominic Ng and more than 200 guests attended the event.
Cui commended the committee's efforts and contribution in promoting friendship and cooperation between the two countries. He pointed out that over the past 34 years since China and the US established diplomatic ties, relations have made remarkable progress despite "twists and turns". He urged news media to provide more objective, accurate and balanced reports on China and China-US relations, in order to create a favorable atmosphere and promote a stable and healthy China-US relationship.
Richard Foristel, director of Webster University in China, recently marked the 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation with a lecture-discussion at the Shanghai consulate, laying out the contemporary significance of that historical document. Foristel outlined the issues, laws and actions leading up to the Civil War in 1861. He described manifest destiny, the profitability of slavery in the southern agricultural economy, the election of Abraham Lincoln, and the secession of the southern states among other developments. He ended the talk by saying that 150 subsequent years of citizen action, political and legislative change, civil rights marches and protests have moved the US closer to being the kind of equitable society we seek.
China's deputy consul-general for San Francisco, Bi Gang, recently visited the campuses of the University of Alaska located at Fairbanks and Anchorage. During the meeting with the chancellors as well as other administrators of the two universities, Bi exchanged views on promoting educational exchanges and cooperation between universities in China and the University of Alaska. He explored the possibilities of promoting student mobility, faculty exchanges, as well as joint educational programs. Bi also met with Chinese students and faculty studying and teaching at the two universities, and concluded his visit by meeting members of the staff of the Confucius Institute in the University of Alaska in Anchorage.
