Peter Haymond, US consul-general in Chengdu, recently highlighted the strong historical ties between the United States and China in remarks at a ceremony commemorating US pilot Lieutenant Robert Mooney in the village of Xiangyun, Yunnan. Mooney was a Flying Tiger in World War II who, in order to avoid crashing his damaged plane into a populated area, piloted his craft to a safer area, giving up the chance to eject to safety and lost his life.
Yuan Nansheng, China's counsel-general for San Francisco, paid a courtesy visit last week to Darrell Steinberg, president pro tempore of California State Senate, to talk about the China-US relations and cooperation between California and Chinese local governments.
Noting that California has long been one of the biggest exporters to China among the 50 states, Yuan said, "We are very glad to witness frequent exchanges of high-level visits, especially California Governor Jerry Brown's recent visit to China."
Zhao Weiping, Chinese consul-general in Chicago, recently spoke at a seminar hosted by the Booth School of Business, University of Chicago. Noting that China's outward direct investment has a short history, but has risen rapidly in the last decade, he said, "In particular, the fast growth of China's ODI even continued after the world financial crisis in 2008, while global foreign direct investment has significantly shrunk. In 2002, China's ODI flow was $2.7 billion. By last year, it had jumped to $77.2 billion, 28 times greater than 10 years earlier."
China's Ambassador to the United States, Cui Tiankai, recently wrote to the Office of Foreign Mission in New York, the Boston Medical Center and Boston University to express his gratitude for their kind assistance and support in dealing with the aftermath of the Boston Marathon bombings, during which a Chinese student was killed and another one wounded. Writing on behalf of the Chinese government, the Chinese embassy, the Chinese consulate-general in New York and the families of the Chinese victims, Cui also offered his deep condolences to the American families who lost loved ones in the bombings and his best wishes to those who are recovering from the tragedy.
