Chan at his best, with no expense spared

A scene from the film Drunken Master 2. Provided to China Daily

The film Drunken Master 2, filmed when Jackie Chan was in his prime, and 16 years after Drunken Master, is a transcendent pairing of classic Shaw Brothers director Lau Kar-leung and Chan that is what many claim to be the greatest martial arts film ever made.

The film is now being presented in New York by The Film Society of Lincoln Center and New York Asian Film Festival. In a take on the legend of Wong Fei-hung, Chan shares the screen with the great Ti Lung and Anita Mui, who almost steals the show as his motor-mouthed stepmother. The plot revolves around Fei-hung's attempts to foil a foreign syndicate trafficking in ancient Chinese artifacts, but the film's jaw-dropping kung fu sequences need little explanation. Made with no consideration for budget or schedule, it took three months just to shoot the final action scene.

The screening will be preceded by a short Q&A with Chan.

Date: June 11
