2 killed in candy factory blast in Mexico

MEXICO CITY - An 18-year-old man died on Friday due to a blast at a candy factory in a Mexican city bordering the US state of Texas, rising the accident's death toll to two, local authorities said.

The explosion occurred on Thursday in the Dulces Blueberry factory, located in the Industrial Park Benito Juarez in Ciudad Juarez, border city of the northern Mexican state of Chihuahua.

The blast left a worker dead inside a workshop and caused collapse of part of the building, where falling pieces of concrete and the blow of the explosion injured more than 50 employees in the operational area, some of them remained in critical condition.

The second victim had been hospitalized for treatment of third degree burns, said the city's Civil Protection Director Fernando Motta Allen.

Local authorities estimated that about 300 workers were working in the area when the explosion occurred, indicating that there are no more bodies inside the factory premises.

The Chihuahua state prosecutor's office announced that it has already started investigation to determine the causes and the responsibilities the accident.
