The suspect, a 23-year-old student of the University of Calgary, who was arrested soon after the stabbing, would likely face charges including first-degree murder, said Calgary police Chief Rick Hanson at a news conference held Tuesday afternoon. Hanson said "this is the worst mass murder in Calgary's history."
According to Hanson, the suspect, whose name is not released, is the son of a veteran police officer. The five victims were all in their 20s, including a woman and four men.
"We understand the party was for friends and people of the university and the suspect was an invited guest," said Hanson, adding the attacks happened shortly after his arrival at the party.
It is not immediately known what exactly led up to the tragic event.
According to neighbors, the people at the house, rented by three students of the University of Calgary, had been celebrating the last day of university classes before the shocking tragedy took place.
The investigation is underway.
The University of Calgary also ran a statement at its website mourning the loss of five young people killed in its northwest community of Brentwood.
