UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon on Wednesday extended his warm greetings to the Chinese people on the occasion of the Lunar New Year, or the Spring Festival.
At the beginning of a video message, Ban introduced himself and said "Happy Lunar New Year" in Mandarin Chinese.
"I especially thank the many supporters of the United Nations in China. You're vital to the success of our efforts to advance peace, development and human rights," he said.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of the world organization and, according to the Chinese zodiac, also is the Year of the Sheep. "Traditionally, the sheep signifies a gentle and compassionate spirit," he said.
"This year, let us be inspired to show great kindness and caring in striving to reach our ambitious goals," he said. "Please accept my best wishes for your continued good health, happiness and success in this Year of the Sheep."
The Spring Festival, which falls on Thursday this year, is China's most important annual event for family reunions.
