China's Global Market Forum during the upcoming Bookexpo America will provide the American public with more ways to better understand the nation, China's Consul General in New York Zhang Qiyue said on Tuesday.

During a welcoming ceremony held at the Asia Society Garden Court, Zhang that she noticed "a very strong interest from the US in learning more about China".

Wu Shangzhi, vice-minister of state administration of press, publication, radio, film and television, agreed and said the series of events is an important cultural exchange between the two countries, who are celebrating 36 years of diplomatic ties.

Bookexpo America is one of the world's major book publishing gatherings. The 2015 BEA features China as its guest of honor for the first time.

"The United States and China are close trading partners and China imports the most titles from the US," Wu said.

He added that about 500 publishing professionals, joined by 25 celebrated Chinese writers, will bring 10,000 English-language titles to the publishing event. More than 130 cultural events will be held, along with six exhibitions on film and ancient culture.

"I believe the writers and publishers here will have great stories to tell about China," Zhang said.

Steve Rosato, BEA's event manager has been working with the Chinese side for the GMF since 2011. "We've been climbing the mountain thus far," Rosato said. "Now it's time to enjoy the view."
