BANGKOK - The head of the international wrestling federation resigned on Saturday in the wake of the International Olympic Committee's decision to drop the sport from the 2020 Summer Games.
The departure of Switzerland's Raphael Martinetti came at the FILA Executive Committee meeting in Phuket, Thailand.
The FILA Executive Committee meeting was scheduled to hold a media conference later Saturday.
The IOC executive board voted on Tuesday to eliminate wrestling from its list of core sports, making way for another to be added in 2020.
Wrestling will remain on the program for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro but faces a fight against seven other sports for inclusion at the Games four years later. A final decision is to be made at the 125th IOC session in September.
