BEIJING - Ten Taiwan banks have received permission from the Chinese mainland to establish branches on the mainland, eight of which have already started operations, a mainland official said Wednesday.

One of the Taiwan banks is permitted to handle renminbi, or yuan, business for Taiwan enterprises, Fan Liqing, spokeswoman for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, told a news conference.
