BEIJING - Chinese shares closed lower on Friday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 0.97 percent, or 21.40 points, to end at 2,177.91.

The Shenzhen Component Index moved down 0.93 percent, or 81.19 points, to 8,691.39.
