Yuan Longping, a famous scientist in the field of hybrid rice and a member of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, revealed on March 2 his plan to raise rice production to more than 15,000 kilograms per hectare.
In September, in Longhui county, Hunan province, Yuan produced a harvest of 13,899 kg per hectare in experiments featuring hybrid rice.
In Liu'an county, Jiangsu province, Yuan and his team have gained the support of the local government, which selected three sample pieces of farmland, each of 6.6 hectares, for future experiments.
Yuan said he has already sent several senior assistants ahead to undertake preparatory work.
