China, Laos vow Mekong cooperation

BEIJING - State Councilor Meng Jianzhu met here on Monday with Bouasieng Champaphan, deputy chief of general staff of Lao People's Army, pledging to enhance law enforcement cooperation along the Mekong.

Meng, also minister of Public Security, said China attaches great importance to law enforcement and security cooperation along the Mekong River which runs through China, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand.

China believes that such cooperation will not only help safeguard the security of the vessels and personnel traveling along the international shipping line, but also help maintain regional security and stability, and develop the regional economy, said Meng.

Meng praised Laos' efforts and contribution in advancing the cooperation mechanism among the four countries, also calling on the four countries to beef up law enforcement and security cooperation along the Mekong.

Bouasieng said Laos is willing to work with China, Myanmar and Thailand to push the four-nation law enforcement and security cooperation along Mekong River to a new level.
