BEIJING - China is considering sending personnel to participate in the United Nations' observers mission in Syria, Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin said here Thursday.

The scale of the UN observers mission should be determined by its advance team now working in Syria, Liu said at a routine press briefing.

"We believe that Mr Kofi Annan will raise relevant suggestions to the UN Security Council, and China will maintain contact with the relevant parties of the UNSC on that," Liu said.

The advance team of UN observers arrived in Damascus Sunday night to monitor the implementation of the cease-fire brokered by UN-Arab League joint special envoy Kofi Annan.

Their arrival came a day after the UN Security Council unanimously approved the observer mission. The team will be followed by other groups of observers.
