BEIJING - Vice President Xi Jinping said Tuesday that China will continue to support and participate in efforts made by the UN in multiple areas, as well as support the UN General Assembly president.

The pledge came out of a meeting between Xi and visiting President-Elect of the 67th session of the UN General Assembly Vuk Jeremic, who is also Serbia's foreign minister.

Xi stressed the importance of the UN's role in the face of a growing tendency toward multipolarity, the hard recovery of the global economy and profound reforms in international systems and mechanisms.

"The United Nations, as a universal inter-governmental international organization with the highest authority, should play a core role in global governance," Xi said.

He added that China will firmly abide by the rules and principles of the UN Charter, fulfill the country's responsibilities and obligations and make active contributions for the development of the UN's causes.

Jeremic, who was elected president of the 67th session of the UN General Assembly in June this year, spoke highly of the contributions made by China to the United Nations and voiced a will to boost cooperation with China.

He said the 67th session will prioritize issues of great concern, such as the promotion of sustainable development, and maintain unity among UN members.

Xi also called on further cooperation between China and Serbia, as the two sides established a strategic partnership in 2009.

He said China is ready to make joint efforts with Serbia to further deepen their cooperation and promote the continuous development of bilateral ties.

Jeremic said Serbia attaches high importance to its relations with China and will further promote their cooperation.

Jeremic is visiting China from July 16 to 18 at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart Yang Jiechi.

The 67th session of the UN General Assembly will open in September.
