Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc said it will provide 40 positions to employees who are being laid off in its Nanjing Software Center, which might be closed in light of the company’s recently announced global job cuts.

Meng Pu, Motorola Mobility’s senior vice president and Greater China CEO, on Wednesday said that the 40 new jobs will be in the US, Shanghai or Beijing.

“Those staff members protected by the country’s law won’t get laid off,” Meng said.

He added that most of the laid-off employees in Beijing, Tianjin and Shanghai have terminated their labor contracts with Motorola.

“Motorola is still negotiating with employees in Nanjing. Though the layoff plan was carried out almost at the same time in different cities, Nanjing has more employees, so more time is needed,” Meng said.

Apart from financial compensation, Motorola Mobility has provided outplacement services to help the employees find new jobs, including inviting headhunters and other businesses to recruit at the software center. Motorola Mobility also is providing a professional career counselor to soften the blow of being laid off.

With more than 500 software engineers, the Nanjing site is the largest of three branches set up by Motorola Mobility’s China Software Center.
