The chief engineer at the Research Institute of Highways under the Ministry of Transport in China has become the first Chinese inductee into the Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) hall of fame.

Wang Xiaojing was inducted into the hall of fame at the 19th ITS World Congress on Monday. His induction honors his outstanding achievements in improving China's road network.

This year, the ITS World Congress is being hosted in Vienna, Austria from Oct 22 to 26. Stakeholders, public authorities and representatives of the ITS industry worldwide are attending the annual summit.

Wang, who is also the director of the National Center of ITS Engineering and Technology in China, has been recognized by the global ITS community for his achievement in establishing an overall strategy to develop the nation's ITS industry.

The hall of fame was created in 2010 and three new people are inducted into it at the congress every year. There can only be one nominee from the Asian-Pacific region every year. 

Wang, 55, is a well-known expert in his field for his devotion to promoting ITS technology solutions in China, especially the Electronic Toll Collection system (ETC). He has been committed to the research and development of ITS Technology since the mid-1990s.

China hosted the ITS World Congress in 2007 in Beijing.

The ITS World Congress held its first session in Paris in 1994 and since then has met every year in different locations throughout the world. In October 2007, the 14th World Congress on ITS took place in Beijing with the theme of "ITS for a Better Life".
