Online exhibition of achievements

An online version of an ongoing exhibition on China's progress held at the Beijing Exhibition Center was launched on Tuesday. Titled "Scientific Development and Splendid Achievements", the online exhibition comprised nine parts showing China's achievements in fields such as economics, politics, culture, society and ecology.

76 officials captured abroad

Chinese prosecuting bodies have captured 76 government officials on the run abroad and accused of committing work-related crimes during the past five years, according to the Ministry of Supervision. During this period, more than 500 fugitives of economic-related crimes, including government officials, were captured outside China.

Marine zoning plans approved

The government has approved maritime zoning plans submitted by Shanghai and the southern provinces of Guangdong and Hainan for 2011-20, the State Council said on Tuesday. The council issued a document instructing local governments in the three regions to control reclamation projects; protect fishermen's livelihoods and the development of modern fisheries; curb oceanic pollution; and strive to improve the marine environment.

Investors needed in cancer research

Minister of Health Chen Zhu said that the Chinese government should encourage private investors to fund cancer research. While the ongoing healthcare system reform provides an important opportunity for cancer research and the China National Cancer Center has also been established, China still needs more private capital invested into cancer research, Chen said at a US-China symposium on cancer research, which was held from Sunday to Tuesday in Beijing.

Women exposed to secondhand smoke

Nearly two-thirds of women of reproductive age in China are exposed to secondhand tobacco smoke at home and more than half are exposed to it in the workplace, increasing the risk of complications in pregnancy, including stillbirths and infant death. The findings, released by the World Health Organization on Tuesday, are from a tobacco survey conducted in China in 2010 by the centers for disease control and prevention in China, the United States and the WHO.

Hydropower plant starts operating

China's third-largest hydropower station became operational on Monday with the world's largest power generating unit officially starting work. The No 7 generator, with an installed capacity of 800,000 kilowatts, at the Xiangjiaba hydropower station, started working at 4:30 pm after a three-day test run, its operator, China Three Gorges Corp, said.

Donation launched for quake-hit area

Residents in major cities across China are being asked to donate to children in quake-hit areas in Yiliang county. The campaign, organized by the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation and supermarket chain RT-Mart, was launched in 52 cities nationwide. The county in Yunnan province was hit by a series of earthquakes in September.

Snow survivors in hospital move

Two survivors of a snowstorm that left three Japanese tourists dead in North China over the weekend were transferred to a county hospital on Tuesday for further examination, local authorities said. The two, a 59-year-old Japanese woman and a Chinese tour guide, are suffering from frostbite but are in stable condition, according to the government of Huailai county in Hebei province.

44 gangsters on trial in Guangzhou

A total of 44 people from a major criminal gang were brought to court for trial during a public hearing in Haizhu District People's Court in Guangzhou, Guangdong province, on Monday. The suspects, including gang head Huang Jiantang, 44, were charged with intentionally causing injury, gathering a crowd to fight and illegally running casinos in Conghua, a suburban city of Guangzhou.

Business leaders praise ties

Delegates to a summit of business leaders held on Tuesday praised the peaceful development of ties between the mainland and Taiwan over the past four years, saying the trend is in line with international expectations and has benefited people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits. The summit, launched in 2003, has become a platform for global Chinese business leaders to exchange ideas on important issues.

Earth science inauguration

An international university consortium on earth science, which counts 11 universities from seven countries as members, was inaugurated on Tuesday in Wuhan, Hubei province. The consortium was initiated by the China University of Geosciences. Its members include the University of Hong Kong, Stanford University, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Universite Pierre et Marie Curie, and Lomonosov Moscow State University.

Book on reform presented in UK

The English-language edition of a new book on China's reform and opening-up, written by former vice-premier Li Lanqing, was presented on Monday to a number of renowned British academic institutions and enterprises. At the presentation ceremony in London, the British Museum and the University of Oxford were among institutions receiving the book, titled Breaking Through: The Birth of China's Opening-up Policy.
