BEIJING - "Iron Man 3" has broken China's box office record by raking in 130 million yuan ($21.1 million) on its opening day.
It topped the 110 million yuan which "Transformers 3" took on its opening day in 2011, entertainment website mtime.com said in a statement on Thursday.
Debuting on Wednesday, the last day of the May Day holiday, the superhero sequel stars Robert Downey Jr. and domestic actress Fan Bingbing.
The movie has attracted most votes in a poll conducted by Twitter-style website Sina Weibo to list which films will be favorites for theater-goers in May.
Hong Kong director Peter Chan's "American Dreams in China," scheduled to debut on May 17, came second in the list.
Tarantino's first commercial release, "Django Unchained," which was suspended "for technical reasons" in April, took third spot. It is now expected to debut on May 12, according to the website.
