The storage dam of a hydropower station located in Gaozhou, Guangdong province collapsed on Wednesday night, leaving several villagers missing, Nanfang Daily reported on Thursday.
The flood, which destroyed two houses in Gecang village, receded at about 10 pm Wednesday, but heavy rains from Typhoon Utor continues to pour over the village.
Villagers are short of fresh water and food. The storm also cut off the electricity and it hasn't been restored as of 11 am on Thursday.
Typhoon Utor, the strongest typhoon to hit China this year, made landfall in the southwest of Guangdong on Wednesday afternoon, whipping up gales and torrential rain.
