A tyto was rescued by villagers and later set free after it got lost in an uninhabited house in Wuhan, Wuhan Evening News reported on Sunday.
The ghost-like barn owl, a species under the second-class State protection, was discovered by a resident surnamed Chen.
Scared by its unusual appearance and huge wings, Chen called police about the "little monster".
The owl was later identified by the local wild animal protection association.
