Ji Zhongxing, convicted of setting off explosives at Beijing Capital International Airport in July, will appeal to Beijing No 3 Intermediate People's Court against the verdict.

Beijing Times reported that Ji's attorney Liu Xiaoyuan will submit the appeal to the court on Thursday.

Ji was sentenced to 6 years in jail by Beijing Chaoyang District People's Court on Tuesday.

Confined to a wheelchair, Ji set off a homemade explosive device outside the Beijing Capital International Airport's Terminal 3 arrivals exit on July 20, severely injuring himself and causing minor injuries to a police officer.

According to the appeal letter, Ji said the explosive went off through negligence and was not intentional.

Ji said previously that he went to the airport to protest against an unresolved dispute relating to an incident with two security guards in Dongguan, Guangdong province, in 2005 that he alleges caused him severe injuries and meant that he had to use a wheelchair.

Ji's attorney Liu Xiaoyuan said Ji will also file a lawsuit against Guangdong Public Security Department and Dongguan city government because the two government agencies did not disclose related information regarding the investigation of the Dongguan incident to him.
