High school begins with military precision
The Deputy Head Master of Menglianggu Middle School, Su Yong Guo, made the call last week at the opening of a fortnight-long military training exercise of his school’s freshmen. Menglianggu is a rural region in Mengyin County in Shandong Province’s Linyi.
“Military training will teach you to be hardworking, fearless in the face of hardship, temptation and hot weather. It will also help you overcome mental laziness,” Su said.
“Menglianggu keeps a red revolutionary spirit as tradition, (so) carry the tradition forward. This is our pride, but also the driving force of our efforts.”

Su said the military summer camp is a perfect response to President Xi Jinping’s national call for the army to not only have a strong physique, but also a rich knowledge and determination to serve their country and ideals.

The military summer camp at Menglianggu is being conducted by 18 volunteer students from Shandong University’s Career Development Club.
The 240 minors are being drilled in an array of subjects such as physics, mathematics, biology, geography, history, English, self-defense, military stanzas, medical self-care and practical skills such as how to react during an emergency such as an earthquake.
Chairperson of the club and law major Jing Ming said the now annual training empowers the students in various ways and socializes and opens them to interesting world views and prospects.
Thirteen-year-old Xu Ying said she has learned more about her classmates during the activity and has picked up the basics and the importance of team spirit.

Menglianggu was the site of one of the fiercest battles between the People’s Liberation Army of the Chinese Communist Party and the National Revolutionary Army of Kuomintang during the Chinese Civil War in the ’40s. It is now a popular tourist destination owing to its history and scenic sites such as Mount Meng.
