Guangzhou

Vancouver songbird

Qu Wanting, a Harbin-born and Vancouver-based singer-songwriter who rose to fame with her hit song, You Exist in My Song, is ready to showcase her musical talent to Guangzhou on Jan 6. The playful singer will stage her adaptations of Chinese pop classics, including Love by Taiwanese band Little Tigers and Club of Broken Hearts by Hong Kong band Grasshopper. Qu will also sing Fix You in tribute to the British rock band Coldplay.

8 pm, Jan 6. Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall, 259, Dongfeng Zhonglu, Yuexiu district, Guangzhou. 020-8355-2030.

Funny, critical play

The stage adaptation of popular Chinese writer Han Han's novel Glory Days will be shown in Guangzhou on Jan 12. In the novel, seven fresh college grads choose to work as volunteer teachers in a small town, where they meet strange characters, such as an allegedly insane rapper and a dog working as a gym teacher. The play retains the absurdity of the novel and presents Han Han's humorous, sharp critiques of society. The lines touch on hot issues, including corruption, casting couches and dissatisfying education.

8 pm, Jan 12. Huanghuagang Theater, 96, Xianlie Zhonglu, Yuexiu district, Guangzhou. 020-3836-2199.
