Sotheby's charity auction fetches $2.5 million

A charity auction by Sotheby's (Beijing) Auction raised 15.57 million yuan ($2.54 million) on Sept 8, and part of the proceeds will benefit the Ai You Reborn project which provides medical and nursing care to orphans.

Thirteen contemporary ink paintings went under the hammer.

Seven Sages by Ren Zhong, 46, an ink painter and collector, went for a price of 8.85 million yuan. Feng Yuan's The Hunt was sold for 2.95 million yuan.

Sotheby's is celebrating its 40th anniversary in Hong Kong. It was granted a license last year to conduct auctions and other related business on the mainland, and will present its first major sales in Beijing at the end of the year. Its major rival, Christie's, will hold a debut auction on Sept 26 in Shanghai.
