"Xieyi", literally meaning painting the meaning, has been a tradition of Chinese ink art which skips the depiction of details but stresses on bringing out the inner meanings and spirits of the subject matters.

An exhibition at the National Art Museum of China shows how modern oil painters try to adapt this practice of Chinese painting into the realm of oil painting.

The works are produced by both established and younger members of the China Oil Painting Society in Beijing, exhibiting the scope and depth of their achievement of "xieyi" aesthetics.

The exhibition runs from Sept 14 to 25.
