Comment on "Many Chinese cities see air pollution on Spring Festival eve" (China Daily website, Feb 1)
The Ministry of Environmental Protection is either a white elephant or was simply established to churn out report cards for a few to savor. It is not difficult to tackle the firecracker problem. The authorities should regulate the factories that make firecrackers or stop them from making any, depending on the severity of air pollution. Once the production of firecrackers decreases or ceases, air pollution can be controlled.
