COPENHAGEN - Denmark's famed cyclist Rolf Soerensen admitted Monday that he had used blood-boosting EPO and cortisone in the 1990s.

"I used EPO periodically in the 90s," said the 47-year-old Soerensen in a statement.

"I have also in some cases used the substance cortisone. There is no other excuse than that I did what I felt compelled to do to be an equal among peers," he added.

Sorensen, who won two stages of the Tour de France in 1994 and 1996, refused to identify other riders.

"There will not be any names here. No allegations against other named individuals. It's not my style," he said.

"The only thing I will say is that I, as we all know today, was not alone in it."

Sorensen won a silver medal in the road race at the 1996 Olympic Games.
