The social elite in Tang China were expected to display familiarity with a substantial body of past literary works in contexts as varied as social poetry composition and the civil service exam. While simple memorization was one strategy, there was a recognized need for more systematic ways of organizing literary information so that it could be mastered and utilized efficiently. Approximately 1,200 people attended an April 22 memorial service for Lu Lingzi, the Boston University student who was killed in the Boston Marathon bombing, including Zhong Ruiming, deputy consul- general from China's New York consulate, who offered condolences from the speaker's podium. Lu's piano teacher Han Nah Son performed a favorite Chopin piece, and a horseshoe-shaped table was laden with white bouquets and two teddy bears in BU sweaters, while a gong was placed at the white-draped entrance doors.
"Her dream was very simple," friend Zheng Minhui told the throng of students and staff, including university chaplains, as well as the general public and Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick. "She wanted a not necessarily rich life, but a peaceful life, with a stable job, a happy family and a lovely dog."
US Secretary of State John Kerry saluted Stephen A. Schwarzman, head of the Blackstone Group, for creating a $300 million scholarship last week for study at a Chinese university. "Increasing the number of American students that study abroad in China is a top priority for the Obama administration," he said. "That's why the State Department sends more students to China than any other country through exchange programs like the Fulbright, Gilman, and Critical Language Scholarships. We are investing in the long-term US-China relationship.
Schwarzman hopes the program will rival the Rhodes scholarship in prestige and influence. Backed by a group of mostly Western blue-chip companies with interests in China, the Schwarzman Scholars program, endowed with one of the largest single gifts to education in the world, will pay for 200 students every year from around the globe to attend a one-year master's program at Tsinghua University in Beijing.
Mona Locke, wife of US Ambassador Gary Locke and a special adviser for the EducationUSA program, promoted student exchanges at two events in Shanghai last week. She discussed why it's important to study abroad, cultural differences between China and the US, how to prepare a personal statement and how to choose a major. She spoke about her own experiences growing up as a second-generation Chinese-American.
