BEIJING - A Foreign Ministry spokesman on Tuesday urged Canada to "uphold justice" in the case of Chinese student Lin Jun, who was allegedly killed and dismembered by a Canadian pornographic actor.

Luka Rocco Magnotta, accused of murdering and dismembering Lin last month, was repatriated to Montreal Monday night under heavy security. He is scheduled to appear in court in Montreal Tuesday, where he would be formally arraigned on five charges, including first-degree murder.

He was arrested at a Berlin Internet cafe on June 4 following a global manhunt and had been held in the German capital until his deportation.

Spokesman Hong Lei said during a daily press briefing that the Chinese government hopes to see a fair trial in order to allow the victim to rest in peace.

The case has caused serious concern in China and Canada, Hong said, adding that the Chinese government will continue to pay close attention to the case.

He also urged the Canadian side to respect Lin's relatives' wishes in handling the case.

Lin was a 33-year-old Chinese national enrolled in an engineering and computer science program at Montreal's Concordia University. His family traveled from China to Montreal earlier this month and wrote an open letter thanking Canadians for their support.
