Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has announced that Japan aims to simultaneously turn the wheels of fiscal rehabilitation and economic growth in an apparent effort to dispel concerns about Japan's fiscal health expressed at the Group of Eight summit.
Abe made the remarks Tuesday at a press conference held after the conclusion of the G8 summit in Lough Erne, Northern Ireland.
"We plan to present a mid-term fiscal plan [spelling out targets for fiscal rehabilitation] by the end of summer," Abe said.
Abe also said the government would raise the consumption tax rate by 3 percentage points as scheduled in April 2014.
"[The tax hike] has been decided and it is necessary to secure the state's credibility as well," Abe said.
"We'll make a [final] judgment from a comprehensive viewpoint by examining [the real growth rate in the gross domestic product] for the April-June quarter."
He also emphasised his resolve of setting the Japanese economy on course for steady growth, which in turn would generate growth in the global economy.
"G-8 leaders expressed their high expectations and evaluations [of my economic policies]," Abe said.
"I got the feeling that Japan is about to jump to the centre of the world again."
Abe also touched on North Korean issues.
"I emphasised that North Korea will never be allowed to possess nuclear arms and that the abduction of Japanese nationals [by North Korean agents] must be resolved," Abe said.
"These [points] were firmly supported by G-8 leaders."
