TOKYO - Japan and the United States on Monday kicked off their second round of bilateral trade talks on auto and trade barriers in parallel with the US-led Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade talks, reported local media.
Ahead a series of TPP meetings of the 12 involving countries on Tuesday in Indonesia's Bali, the two countries in Tokyo are expected to discuss during the two-day meeting issues including automobiles and non-tariff barriers in nine fields like insurance and intellectual property, according to Japan's Kyodo News.
Japan is represented by Takeo Mori, ambassador for economic diplomacy, in the second round of talks, while the US delegation is headed by Acting Deputy US Trade Representative Wendy Cutler. The two sides failed to reach an agreement during the first round of the talks in August.
Tokyo and Washington unveiled the bilateral negotiation framework in April after their preparatory talks for Japan's participation of the TPP talks.
The 12 TPP countries are planning to reach a basic agreement at an upcoming summit slated for October 8 in Bali, which will pave the way for the conclusion of a TPP deal by the end of the year, said Kyodo.
