Kung Fu Hero, a Broadway-styled bilingual musical, was performed by a local cast at the Miller Outdoor Theatre in Houston last Saturday and Sunday.

Based on the life of legendary Chinese martial artist Fong Sai Yu, the show was written by Burton Wolfe, a Houston Community College professor. Music was composed by Scott Gehman and translated into Chinese by Lawrence Wong.

The show was performed by more than 80 people from the Houston Shaolin Kung Fu Academy (HSKFA) and Dance of Asian American to a cheering crowd of over 10,000 audience in total.

Grandmaster Shi Xing Hao choreographed and directed all the kungfu moves. According to Wolfe, the musical is mostly created around the HSKFA members' extraordinary talent in martial arts.

Yang Song, the Chinese Consul for cultural affairs in Houston, praised the musical as one-of-a-kind cultural event. "It fuses Chinese and American elements together. It's indeed quite innovative and creative."
