China condemns DPRK nuclear test at UN Security Council meeting

China condemned the latest nuclear test by DPRK and reiterated its stance to achieving denuclearization at the Korean Peninsula at a UN Security Council meeting on Monday morning.

The DPRK said it had successfully detonated a hydrogen bomb that can be carried by an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) on Sunday -- its sixth nuclear test.

The Chinese government has expressed firm opposition and strong condemnation to DPRK's conducting another nuclear test, despite widespread opposition of international community, said Liu Jieyi, China's ambassador to the UN.

"It's China's firm stance, as well as the common goal of the international community, to achieve denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, maintain nuclear nonproliferation system and maintain peace and stability in the Northeast Asia," said Liu.

"We strongly urge the DPRK to face the resolve of the international community on a denuclearized Peninsula and comply with relevant UN Security Council resolutions, stop taking wrong actions that will worsen the tension and run against its own interest, and return to dialogue to resolve the problem," he said.
