Live shows do not enjoy as much media exposure as Chinese cinema, but they are bursting with creativity and vitality nonetheless. Gleaming new venues are sprouting across the nation. These architectural wonders play host to an eclectic mix of performing arts, from high-brow to low-brow.

The following 10 shows picked by Raymond Zhou and Chen Jie represent the best of the crop seen in 2010 by the China Daily editorial team (though it should be added we are based in Beijing and the sampling is unavoidably skewed in favor of the capital city).

La Traviata, the NCPA production

The National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA) has continued to provide an array of opera showpieces.

This year, the self-produced La Traviata stood out for its ingenious stage design - the upstage floor reflected as a backdrop but also functioning as a see-through mirror - and fearless conducting by maestro Lorin Maazel.

The excellent imported cast of principal roles was matched by the Chinese cast. The all-too-familiar story of a Parisian courtesan resonated with both opera buffs and dilettantes alike.

NCPA will give a second run of the opera on Feb 13-17 in 2011.
