La Traviata, the NCPA production
The National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA) has continued to provide an array of opera showpieces.
This year, the self-produced La Traviata stood out for its ingenious stage design - the upstage floor reflected as a backdrop but also functioning as a see-through mirror - and fearless conducting by maestro Lorin Maazel.
The excellent imported cast of principal roles was matched by the Chinese cast. The all-too-familiar story of a Parisian courtesan resonated with both opera buffs and dilettantes alike.
NCPA will give a second run of the opera on Feb 13-17 in 2011.
