Asia's largest musical instrument exhibition was unveiled at the Shanghai New International Expo Center on Thursday.

The exhibition, Music China 2013, is a gathering of global brands that will ensure visitors are tuned into various trends in the market, said Yan Minjie, marketing manager from the Intex Shanghai Co Ltd.

The 4-day event, co-sponsored by INTEX Shanghai and the China Musical Instrument Association, features 1,688 companies from 29 countries and regions in eight halls, and sets a record exhibition space of 92,000 square meters.

Eleven pavilions were set up, including displays from the Czech Republic, Germany and Britain, to showcase new instruments and technology.

Experts will share their insights into industry developments, while musicians will perform at indoor and outdoor venues.

Industry leaders from different sectors will also discuss the correlation between instrument manufacturing, retailing and music education, Yan said.

"The event will act as a stimulus to the development of musical instruments in China."

Statistics from the association showed that China sold $7.6 billion worth of musical instruments last year, exceeding $6.6 billion in the United States, to become the world's largest seller of musical instruments.

A professional audio and lighting show was held in conjunction with the instrument event, presenting the world's latest entertainment technology.

It showcases 500 brands from 450 exhibitors in 16 countries and regions.
