China's inspection and quarantine authorities called for a greater effort to implement a new safety law for special equipment, including elevators, boilers, cranes and large recreation facilities, amid a number of accidents this year.
During a work conference on Thursday in Beijing, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine called for more publicity and better supervision among enterprises that produce, sell, operate, use and test special equipment.
The new law, which was passed at the bimonthly session of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress in June, will take effect on Jan 1. Special-equipment accidents, especially elevators, were responsible for up to 300 deaths in the last five years, the authority said.
