Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Thursday dismissed accusations made by the Philippines and Japan against China regarding the South China Sea issue when he addressed his counterparts in Kuala Lumpur.
"The overall situation of the South China Sea is stable and the likelihood of a major conflict taking place does not exist," Wang said said after attending a series of meetings related to East Asia at the annual China-ASEAN foreign ministers meeting.
Beijing opposes any unconstructive words or actions that attempt to "exaggerate their purchases, flare up confrontations and prompt tensions", Wang said.
The senior diplomat noted that since the 1970s, the Philippines have conducted four military operations and illegally occupied eight islands or reefs of China's Nansha Islands in the South China Sea.
"This is the real origin of the territorial disputes between China and the Philippines," Wang said.
He also criticized the Philippines for seeking international arbitration over the South China Sea issue, saying it is "not serving the very interests of the Philippines and its people".
"The Philippine people deserve to know the reality, and the future of the Philippines cannot be hijacked by the very few individuals," Wang said.
As to Japan's comments regarding the South China Sea issue, Wang said, "Japan should first re-examine its words and actions before making comments over others. China is different from Japan."
