The Eagles out-earn One Direction in Forbes rich list

The Eagles, the band of rockers with an average age of 67, earned more in the past year than any other group, according to the Forbes rich list. Dr Dre and Beyonce were the only artists paid more.

Their History of the Eagles tour helped them to out-earn One Direction and their nearest rivals, Bon Jovi.

Best known for Hotel California, the band - currentl line-up Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Timothy B Schmit and Joe Walsh - have earned £63 million ($100 million) in 12 months.

Dr Dre is the highest-paid man in music, earning £395 million ($620m) last year. The West Coast rapper and producer notched up the highest yearly earnings ever recorded by Forbes magazine.

His wealth was boosted by the sale of his company Beats Electronics, purveyor of headphones and speakers, to Apple in a £1.9 billion ($3bn) deal.

The highest-paid woman in music was Beyonce, second in the rich list with earnings of £73 million ($115m).

The Eagles were third-placed, followed by Bon Jovi (£52m/$82m) and Bruce Springsteen (£51m/$81m).

Justin Bieber made £51m ($80m), One Direction £48m ($75m) and Sir Paul McCartney £45m ($71m).

DJ Calvin Harris is the world’s highest-paid DJ with earnings of £42m ($66m).

Rounding off the top 10 is Toby Keith, a country star with his own record label, restaurant chain and tequila brand.

Taylor Swift and Jay Z narrowly miss the top 10.

The Forbes list covers the period June 2013 to June 2014 and collates revenue from record sales, publishing royalties, merchandise, endorsements and business ventures.
