Young Swiss Design Kaleidoscope, an exhibition dedicated to young and emerging Swiss designers, is now showing at Jianwai Downstairs Gallery as part of the Beijing Design Week 2013.
The exhibition features cutting-edge designs in areas including visual arts, furniture and product design. Some of the highlights include armchairs by ACE Furniture Company, Clickazoo for Hermes by Adren Rovero and Moluk toys by Alex Hochstrasser.
FluidSolids, a sustainable material developed by Beat Karrer, is also in the show. The main components of the material come from renewable resources and it is both odor-free and emission-free.
"The aim was to develop a material that matches design needs, rather than trying to adjust the design to the material," Karrer said.
The DNA of Swiss design lies in quality and sustainability, which are also the key competencies of Swiss designers, said co-curator Michel Hueter, who is also the curator of the Design Prize Switzerland.
"This is the best opening for international collaboration. I believe there is a way to do mass production with responsibility. The mass production in China and the sustainable approach by Swiss designers can meet in the middle somewhere," he said.
The exhibition runs from Sept 26 to Oct 3, during which designers will give lectures on site. It will reopen in Shanghai on Oct 18.
