Whether Internet oversight should be strengthened has become a heated discussed topic worldwide, says an article in People's Daily. Excerpts:
The United States reportedly will block a proposal to hand supervision of the Internet to relevant United Nations agencies. Some developed countries also oppose this proposal and try their best to consolidate their leading position in the network field.
They justify their opposition with two reasons. First, supervision will threaten freedom of speech. Second, the supervision will restrain and weaken technological innovation. Yet both of these excuses are fabricated from the prospective of developed countries.
The developed countries would like to maintain their advantage in the IT field and promote their technological monopoly and sales worldwide. But developing countries need to strengthen the supervision of the Internet to better defend their state sovereignty and protect their national interests.
Some telecommunication operators in the Europe even propose to levy heavy taxes on remote users of the online information. Once adopted, the network will be divided more by the information gap between rich and poor.
Global governance increasingly becomes a necessary historic trend for the world. People are challenged by a number of unprecedented challenges today, which are actually caused by the greedy unilateralism of some developed countries. The Internet should be an open and well-regulated platform for constructive communication, not another monopolized market by a few behemoths in developed countries.
Past experience indicates an ill-supervised social network will bring not only trouble for the developing countries, but create chaos in the developed countries as well.
Therefore, the openness and freedom of the Internet should be protected by joint efforts of all nations through effective supervision and negotiation.
