Any country or group must have a clear idea what it can contribute to regional peace, stability and development, if it wants to keep a foothold in Asia, says an article in People's Daily (excerpts below).

Japan signed its Political Declaration with NATO on April 15 for a stronger partnership. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe promotes his "value diplomacy" around the world. Now he extends his hand to NATO, which increases uncertainties about Asia's security. All Asian countries should be vigilant over Japan's action.

Asia is one of the most vigorous regions in today's world. Development is a priority for Asian countries. A peaceful and stable environment is vital for any problems to be solved. Otherwise the costs will be very high, affecting the development of the whole Asia-Pacific region. Japan's action will harm Asia's interests and cause trouble for the region.

Abe's "value diplomacy" is no different from any trick in Japan's history. His purpose is to encircle China. It seems Japan has not yet learned its lessons from its own history. NATO has been trying to penetrate into Asia and Japan is now giving an opportunity.

Asia must be alert.
