GUANGZHOU, China - China's World Cup dream concluded with a consolation 3-1 home win over Jordan in the final round of the World Cup qualifiers for Asia's group A here on Wednesday.
Losing three of their first five games, China had already lost every chance of making themselves into the Brazil World Cup in 2014 before this one, but they had to grasp the final chance to salvage a little decency and hope.
Former Schalke midfielder Hao Junmin opened the scoring for the home side in the 43rd minute after center back Zhang Linpeng's tackle near the halfway line. The 25-year-old scored his second in the 68th minute, gifting the home side a comfortable lead.
Jordan, who had already gone through to the next round, were still looking for a win to clinch their first place in the table. Bachem narrowed the gap with a shot from close range in the 83rd minute in the second half, only to see the opposite striker Yu Dabao secure the victory for the home side only 5 minutes later.
"We are not having many games to play in the future two or three years, so I scored two goals," said Hao after the match.
It was the 10th attempt of the most populous country to make themselves to the World Cup from 1957; they only qualified once in the 2002 World Cup in Korea and Japan.
But Chinese coach Camacho seemed to be optimistic in the team in future years. "The young players had given me some surprise today, I think this team will be a very nice one after two or three years," the Spaniard said.
The 57-year-old signed a three-year contract last August to coach China's national football team. The team had won 3 and lost 3 since he took charge.
