The mascot, named Ningning, the same pronunciation of the last name of the province which means peace and calm, was a cartoon figure of 'harbor seal' carrying best wishes for joy and peace for the games.
The harbor seal is usually found along the coast of northern China, especially in Southeast Liaoning province's Bohai Sea. It is under second-class state protection in the country.
The mascot Ningning was selected out of 1070 pieces of art works collected from 24 provinces and regions in China.
The 12th National Games will open in Shenyang in August, 2013.
