An ongoing sinomatheque offering showcases contemporary and historical work of every genre from the Chinese cinematic diaspora, including films originating from the Chinese mainland, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Screenings will be facilitated through the DVD format and will be followed by moderated discussions.
The work of famed Hong Kong filmmaker, Wong Kar Wai, will be celebrated in June with free screenings of four of his films. All films are in Cantonese with English subtitles.
Wong's Chungking Express (1994) comprises two different stories told in sequence. Each is about a lovesick Hong Kong policeman mulling over his relationship with a woman. The film depicts a paradox in that even though the characters live in densely packed Hong Kong, they are still lonely and live in their own inner worlds.
