The clashes, between the Future Movement party supporters and members of the Arab Movement party headed by Shaker Berjaoui, an ally of the Syrian government, erupted in the Tareek Jadedeh area of Beirut after soldiers at an army checkpoint shot dead a prominent Muslim preacher against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Sheikh Ahmad Abdul-Wahed and his companion, Sheikh Mohammad Husseinal-Mereb, were killed while on their way to attend a rally organized by Future Movement MP Khaled Daher in the village of Halba to commemorate the movement's victims during the 2008 clashes between pro and anti-government supporters.

Two people were killed in the clashes, including Ali Mohammad Sharab, 30, who died from gunshot wounds. The 18 wounded also suffered gunshot wounds and have been transferred to nearby hospitals.

The NNA said a cautious calm has prevailed in the Tareek Jadedeh area after the Lebanese army intervened to separate the clashing sides and were deployed extensively in the area.
