BBC under intense pressure

The scandal has also damaged the reputation of the internationally-renowned broadcaster BBC.

Some of Savile's alleged sex attacks are said to have taken place on BBC premises, before and after TV shows he was involved in.

The BBC's flagship TV news program 'Newsnight' had put together a detailed examination of some of the allegations against Savile just a month after his death.

But the package was pulled before broadcast, and questions are now being asked why.

The editor involved, who has now stepped aside, said he was not put under pressure by BBC management.

Nevertheless, the name of the broadcaster has already been tarnished.

The Savile revelations have led several high-profile female BBC presenters to claim they were sexually molested at the BBC in the 1980s and that sexual harassment was tolerated.

The BBC has now announced three separate inquiries into the child abuse,the alleged sexual harassment, and the axing of the Newsnight story, as a result of the scandal.

If other celebrities are arrested in the near future in connection with the Savile scandal, it will further fuel what is becoming one of the most potent scandals revealed in the British media in decades.
