Building collapses near Mumbai, kills at least 10

MUMBAI - The Death toll from the building collapse near Mumbai has risen to 10 while several people are still feared to be trapped under the debris, said police on Friday.

The three-storey building in Thane district which was built 35 years ago collapsed after midnight when the residents were fast asleep, police said.

Police and rescue team rushed to the site around 2:30 am local time and several brigades arrived later. The relief and rescue operations are still going amid small rain.

Using sensors, the authorities had rescued 20 people from the debris of the building, said K.P. Raghuvanshi, Thane police commissioner.

Among the victims, five are Children including a two-month-old infant girl.

Several are still feared trapped in the debris of the building, police said.

On June 10, a four-storey building collapsed at Mahim in Central Mumbai in which 10 people were killed and six others injured.

Prior to this, a building crashed on April 4 near Mumbra in Thane district which claimed as many as 74 lives and left over 60 injured.
