Congresswoman Grace Meng address the media and other Asian-American organizations at a rally at City Hall in New York on March 13, calling on New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio to name Lunar New Year a public school holiday, as New York State Senator Daniel Squadron (right) and New York City Councilman Peter Koo look on. The rally came days after an open letter sent to de Blasio by 18 lawmakers, asking him to keep his promise to add Lunar New Year to the 2015-16 calendar as school holidays. Grace Meng, the lead signer of the open letter, said the signers were "puzzled and concerned" that Lunar New Year isn’t recognized as a public school holiday.[Photo by Lu Huiquan / For China Daily] |
