Hong Kong has 3.9 million women and 3.3 million men, according to the latest statistics, meaning the number of women is 0.5 million more than that of men.

Twenty percent of the 315 female students from six universities in Hong Kong said in interviews that Hong Kong doesn't have many men, while 34 percent of them said they are afraid to live a lonely life since they can't find proper men.

Some senior marriage counselors in Hong Kong said many Hong Kong women think Hong Kong men don't have much ambition compared with the successful and affluent men in the Chinese mainland.

Many Hong Kong women have chosen to work in the Chinese mainland in recent years with the economic development in the mainland, according to Hong Xuelian, associate professor with Department of Social Work in Hong Kong Baptist University.

Hong also said the Hong Kong women working in the mainland can meet and even marry mainland men who have high qualities in both materials and spirits, while cultural contradictions between the Hong Kong women and men in the Chinese mainland still exist though they are breaking down.

Mary, a university student in South China's Guangzhou, said: "My boyfriend and I don't feel any cultural difference as we listen to the same music, watch the same movie and know the same information, though I was born in Hong Kong and he was born in Guangzhou."

"I will choose to reside in Guangzhou or Shenzhen when we are married, because quality of life in these cities is even better than that in Hong Kong," added Mary.
